Digital Scans Add-On in San Francisco
High-resolution digital scans of your film negatives, delivered alongside your prints, so you can share and post without ever touching an AI editing tool.
What to Expect
High-resolution digital scans of your film negatives, delivered alongside your darkroom prints, so you can share and post online without ever touching an AI editing tool. This add-on pairs with any session — you keep the physical prints and negative, and get a clean digital file for anything that needs to live online. It exists specifically because film photography and needing to share something on Instagram or LinkedIn aren’t mutually exclusive.
Choosing real film doesn’t mean opting out of the internet — most clients still need something digital eventually, whether that’s a LinkedIn headshot, a wedding photo for a shared album, or a family portrait sent to relatives who couldn’t make it. This add-on exists specifically so that need doesn’t force a compromise on the "no AI, real film" standard anywhere in the process.

Book nowText (415) 573-FILMPricing & What's Included
This is an add-on to any other service, not a standalone hourly booking — pricing is added to whichever primary session you’re scheduling, confirmed when you book.
Scans are typically delivered within 2-3 business days of development, faster than the 5-7 business days for hand-printed darkroom prints, since scanning doesn’t require the hand-printing process a physical print does.
From Booking to Delivery
Add It to Any Booking
This isn’t a standalone session — it’s added to any other service on booking, whether that’s a portrait, wedding, headshot, or any other session type.
Negative Scanning
Once your film is developed, negatives are scanned at high resolution using dedicated film-scanning equipment — a direct capture of what’s actually on the negative, not a photo of a print.
Quality Check
Each scan is checked for proper exposure and color/tone accuracy relative to the negative before delivery — the goal is a scan that reflects exactly what the film captured, not an enhanced or altered version of it.
Delivery
Scans are typically delivered within 2-3 business days of development — faster than the 5-7 business days for hand-printed darkroom prints, since scanning doesn’t require the same hand-printing process.
Why This Session Is Shot on Real Film
It might seem like digital scans and a "no AI" film photography brand are in tension — but they’re not. A scan is a direct, mechanical capture of exactly what exists on the physical negative. It’s not generated, not upscaled by a model guessing at detail that isn’t there, not "enhanced" by an algorithm deciding what the image should look like. It’s the same honest, unaltered image as the print — just in a digital format for practical sharing.
This distinction matters more than it might seem. Plenty of "film-look" content online is actually a digital photo run through an AI filter that fakes grain and tonal characteristics. A scan of a real negative has none of that — the grain is real because the film is real; the tonal range is real because it was actually exposed that way.
Practically, this add-on exists because most people today do need something shareable online, even when they specifically want real film photography — a LinkedIn headshot, a wedding photo for social media, a family portrait to send to relatives who couldn’t be there. This service bridges that gap without compromising the "real film, no AI" standard anywhere in the process.
It’s also worth being explicit about what this add-on is not: it’s not a way to "fix" a photo digitally after the fact. There’s no digital retouching layer applied during scanning — what you get is a faithful digital copy of the same physical negative your darkroom print comes from, sharing the same honest, unaltered character.
Scan Specs & File Format
Negatives are scanned using dedicated film-scanning equipment rather than a flatbed scanner or a photograph-of-a-print approach — the difference matters because a direct negative scan captures far more real detail and tonal range than a secondary capture of an already-printed image.
Files are delivered at a resolution suitable for both web use and reasonably sized printing elsewhere if you decide later that you want a print made outside our darkroom — though for the best possible print quality, our own hand-printed darkroom prints, made directly from the negative, remain the stronger option.
No AI upscaling, sharpening, or enhancement is applied at any stage — the scan reflects exactly what exists on the negative. If a frame has natural film grain or a specific tonal character from how it was shot, the scan preserves that faithfully rather than smoothing or "improving" it.
How to Prepare
✓Decide before your session (or at least before development) whether you want scans, so we can plan the workflow accordingly.
✓If you have a specific platform or use case (LinkedIn, a wedding website, a printed announcement), mention the format or dimensions you need.
✓Scans reflect exactly what’s on the negative — if you want a specific crop or framing, that’s best planned during the actual shoot, not after.
✓This add-on works with any other service — mention it when booking whichever primary session you’re scheduling.

Digital Scans Add-On — Common Questions
Do digital scans look as good as the physical prints?
They capture the same image with real fidelity, though a hand-printed darkroom print has a tonal depth — genuine blacks, dodge-and-burn detail — that a screen can’t fully reproduce. Most clients want both for different purposes.
Can I get scans without ordering physical prints?
This is offered as an add-on to another service, so it’s paired with a primary session — but scans can be prioritized if physical prints aren’t your main goal.
What resolution are the scans?
High-resolution, suitable for both web use and reasonably sized printing through other services if you decide you want a print later.
Do you edit or retouch the scans at all?
Only traditional adjustments equivalent to darkroom printing techniques — no AI retouching, skin smoothing, or generative editing, consistent with our process for physical prints.
How quickly can I get scans if I need them urgently?
Standard turnaround is 2-3 business days after development — mention any specific deadline when you book and we’ll do what we can to accommodate it.
Can I order scans of old negatives I already have, without a new session?
Yes — that’s typically handled through the Fine Art Darkroom Prints service, which accepts your own existing negatives; ask about pairing it with scans.
Can I get scans of every frame from a roll, or just selected ones?
Both are available — full-roll scanning gives you every frame, while selected scanning focuses on your top picks; discuss your preference when booking.
What file format are the scans delivered in?
Standard high-resolution image files suitable for both web sharing and further printing elsewhere — ask about specific format needs if you have a particular use case.
Do you keep a backup of my scans after delivery?
Ask about our file retention policy when you book — we recommend keeping your own backup copy regardless once files are delivered.
Can I request scans in black and white only, or is there a color option?
Since this pairs with our black and white film sessions, scans reflect the black and white negative directly — there’s no color conversion involved since the source material is already black and white.
How is a scan different from a photo of the print taken on my phone?
A dedicated negative scan captures far more real detail and tonal range directly from the negative — a phone photo of a physical print loses detail, introduces glare and color shift, and is a secondary, lower-quality capture.
Can I get scans delivered via a shared cloud folder or do I need to be there in person?
Scans are delivered digitally, no in-person pickup required — ask about delivery method when booking.
Does adding scans slow down the delivery of my physical prints?
No — scans and darkroom prints are processed as separate workflows, so adding scans doesn’t delay your physical print timeline.
Can I order scans after already receiving my physical prints, if I change my mind?
Yes — as long as the negatives are still accessible, scans can be ordered after the fact.
Are scans watermarked, or is the file clean for my own use?
Delivered scans are clean, unwatermarked files intended for your own use — ask about any specific commercial licensing terms if applicable.
Do you offer a lower-resolution version specifically optimized for social media file size limits?
Ask when you book if you need a specific file size or dimension for a particular platform — we can deliver accordingly.
Can I request scans in a specific aspect ratio different from the original negative?
The scan reflects the full negative by default; specific crops can be requested and are typically planned during the original shoot for the best result.
How does this add-on work if I’m booking the Vintage Camera Consultation & Rental instead of a photography session?
Scans are meant to pair with a session where we do the shooting — for film you shoot yourself during a camera rental, ask about separate film processing and scanning options when you return the camera.
Can I get a contact sheet scan showing every frame from a roll at once, in addition to individual scans?
Yes — a full contact sheet scan can be provided alongside individual high-resolution scans if you want an overview of the whole roll.
Does this add-on cost the same regardless of how many frames I want scanned?
Pricing is confirmed when you add this to your booking and can vary based on the number of frames — ask for specifics based on your session.
If I only want a couple of frames scanned rather than a whole roll, is that an option?
Yes — selective scanning of just your favorite frames is available if you don’t need every image from the roll.
Do you offer scans as a standalone service for negatives I already have, separate from a booked session?
That’s typically handled alongside the Fine Art Darkroom Prints service, which accepts your own existing negatives — ask about pairing scans with that service.
Can I get a scan of a negative that was shot on a different camera than what I usually use with you?
Yes — as long as it’s film we can develop and scan, the specific camera used doesn’t affect our ability to scan the negative.
Do you scan in a way that preserves the sprocket holes and film edge markings for an authentic look?
Ask when booking — a full-frame scan including edge markings and sprocket holes can be requested if that aesthetic matters to your project.
Is there a limit to how many total scans I can order from one session?
No fixed limit — the number of scans is discussed and confirmed when you add this service to your booking.
Can I request scans be color-corrected or is that not applicable for black and white negatives?
Color correction doesn’t apply to black and white negatives — tonal balance is checked instead, to make sure the scan faithfully reflects the negative’s exposure.
What film stock do you shoot?
Primarily Kodak Tri-X 400 for its classic black and white grain, with Ilford HP5 as an alternative depending on the light and the session. Every roll is developed by hand, never sent to an AI upscaling tool.
Do I get digital scans, or only physical prints?
Both, if you want them. The Digital Scans Add-On gets you high-resolution scans of your negatives for sharing and printing elsewhere, alongside your physical darkroom prints.
How long does it take to get my photos?
Darkroom prints typically take 5-7 business days to develop and print by hand. Digital scans, when added, are usually ready in 2-3 business days.
Do you shoot corporate headshots?
Yes — black and white corporate headshots are one of our most-booked sessions, for individuals and full teams in San Francisco.
Can you shoot outside San Francisco?
Yes, within the Bay Area — reach out with your location and we'll confirm travel details before booking.
Do you rent out vintage cameras?
Yes — the Vintage Camera Consultation & Rental service includes a real 35mm body plus guidance on how to use it for your own shoot.
What if it rains on my session day?
We reschedule at no charge for weather that would ruin an outdoor session. Studio sessions are unaffected either way.
Do you retouch or edit photos with AI?
Never. Every edit is done by hand in the darkroom or with traditional printing techniques — no AI photo editing, no AI-generated portraits, ever.
Can I book a group or family session with more than 5 people?
Yes — larger group and family sessions are available, just note the group size when you book so we can plan the right amount of time.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes, gift certificates are available for any session type — text or call to arrange one.
What sizes do darkroom prints come in?
Standard sizes run from 5x7 up to 16x20, all hand-printed on archival photo paper. Custom sizes are available on request.
Is there a deposit required to book?
Yes, a deposit secures your date; the balance is due at the session. Exact terms are confirmed when you book.
Can I reschedule if something comes up?
Yes, with reasonable notice — reach out as soon as you know and we'll find a new date.
Do you shoot weddings outside the traditional package?
Yes — partial-day coverage and elopements are available in addition to full-day black and white film wedding photography.
