Black & White Headshot Session San Francisco

Black & White Headshot Session in San Francisco

Professional black and white headshots for LinkedIn, corporate teams, and personal branding — shot on real film for a look no AI headshot generator can fake.

About This Session

What to Expect

A black and white headshot session shot the way corporate headshots looked before every platform started auto-smoothing skin and generating backgrounds. Real film, real studio lighting, and a real photographer directing you through natural expressions — for LinkedIn, executive bios, and team pages that need to look like a real company with real people. This is the session built specifically for professional use, where consistency across a whole team matters as much as any single photo.

San Francisco has more startups per capita than almost anywhere else in the country, and most of them eventually need a team page — usually assembled from whatever headshots people happened to have, in wildly inconsistent lighting, backgrounds, and quality. This session exists to fix that in one sitting: one photographer, one lighting setup, one consistent look, applied to every person on the team.

What's Included

  • Individual or full-team headshot sessions, scheduled back-to-back for efficiency
  • Shot on black and white 35mm film for consistent, professional tone across an entire team
  • No AI skin-smoothing, no AI-generated backgrounds — real studio lighting and a real backdrop
  • Fast digital scan turnaround for LinkedIn and website use

Ideal For

  • Startups and small businesses in San Francisco building out a real team page
  • Executives and founders who want a headshot that reads as authentic, not generated
  • Anyone replacing an outdated or AI-generated LinkedIn photo with something real

Pricing & What's Included

Individual sessions run at the flat $300/hr rate, with most people needing well under a full hour once lighting is set — sittings are typically 10-15 minutes each. Team sessions are scheduled as one continuous booking so setup time is shared across the whole group rather than repeated per person.

Digital scans are the primary deliverable most clients need for this service, since headshots are almost always used online — turnaround on scans is typically 2-3 business days. Physical darkroom prints are also available if wanted for a physical office display.

How It Works

From Booking to Delivery

01

Scoping the Team

For team sessions, we start with a headcount and a rough schedule — most individuals only need 10-15 minutes in front of the camera once lighting is set, so a team of 8-10 people can usually be handled in a single studio session with tight, back-to-back scheduling.

02

Setting the Look

Before anyone sits down, we set one consistent lighting setup and backdrop distance so every headshot in the batch matches — same tonal range, same framing logic — which is what actually makes a team page look cohesive rather than assembled from ten different photo sessions.

03

The Sitting

Each person gets a short but real sitting — a few minutes to relax, a handful of expression variations, and direction on posture and angle. We shoot several frames per person on film specifically so there’s real choice at the edit stage, not one forced smile.

04

Development & Selection

Rolls are developed in-house and contact-printed so you can review every frame per person before we commit to final prints or scans — useful for teams who want input on which expression represents them best.

05

Delivery

Digital scans, which is what most teams actually need for LinkedIn and a website, typically turn around in 2-3 business days. Darkroom prints, if wanted for physical use, take 5-7 business days.

The Case for Film

Why This Session Is Shot on Real Film

Every platform now has some version of an AI headshot generator, and they all have the same problem: the output looks like a headshot, not like the specific person who paid for it. Clients and hiring managers have gotten good at spotting the tell — skin that’s too smooth, eyes that are slightly wrong, a background that’s a little too clean. A real photo doesn’t have that problem, because it isn’t generated.

Black and white specifically matters for headshots because it removes a variable that causes real inconsistency across a team: color temperature. Different lighting, different monitors, and different skin tones can make a color headshot batch look mismatched even when it was shot in one session. Black and white sidesteps that entirely — every headshot reads as part of the same set, which is exactly what a team page needs.

And on a more basic level: in a hiring market where candidates and clients are increasingly skeptical of anything that might be AI-generated, a real photo of a real person is becoming a small but genuine trust signal, not just an aesthetic choice.

There’s a compounding effect for teams specifically: once one person on a page has an obviously AI-generated or wildly inconsistent headshot next to colleagues with real, professionally shot ones, the mismatch draws attention in exactly the wrong way. Doing the whole team in one real session removes that problem permanently, not just for the next redesign.

San Francisco Locations

Best San Francisco Spots for This Session

See the full services list or check every San Francisco neighborhood we shoot in on the homepage.

The Studio

The default and recommended setting for headshots — controlled lighting is what makes a batch of team photos look consistent, which matters more here than in almost any other session type.

SoMa Office Locations

For teams that want headshots shot on-site at their own office, SoMa’s clean architecture and natural light make it workable, though studio lighting still produces more consistent results across a group.

Before Your Session

How to Prepare

Bring a couple of outfit options — solid, mid-tone colors photograph best in black and white; avoid busy patterns or logos.

For team sessions, circulate a shared time slot sign-up in advance — the session moves fast, and staggered arrivals keep it efficient for everyone.

Come with hair and grooming already done — we’re not a full styling team, just make sure you look like you on a normal good day.

If this is for a specific platform (LinkedIn banner crop, a specific website module), tell us the dimensions in advance so we can frame accordingly.

Relax your shoulders and jaw before each frame — most stiff-looking headshots come from tension, not from the camera.

Questions

Black & White Headshot Session — Common Questions

How long does a full team of 10 people take to shoot?

Budget roughly 2-2.5 hours for a team of 10, assuming back-to-back individual sittings of 10-15 minutes each plus setup time. Larger teams can be split across two sessions if needed.

Can you match the exact crop LinkedIn or our website needs?

Yes — tell us the platform or the exact pixel dimensions when you book and we’ll frame and crop the scans to match, so there’s no resizing headache on your end.

Do headshots come out looking too dark or too moody for corporate use?

No — corporate headshots use even, flattering studio lighting, which is a different look from the more dramatic shadow work we might use for a creative portrait. The black and white treatment reads as professional and clean, not artistic or moody.

Can we redo one person’s headshot later if someone joins the team after the group session?

Yes — individual sessions are available any time to add a new hire’s headshot without needing to reschedule the whole team.

Do you offer a discount for booking a full team vs. individuals?

Team sessions are scheduled as one continuous booking, which is more time-efficient for everyone — ask about team pricing when you reach out with your headcount.

What if someone on the team is camera-shy?

It happens on almost every team shoot. A few extra minutes of direction and letting them see a couple of test frames on the contact sheet usually settles nerves fast.

Do you shoot on-site at our office, or only in your studio?

Studio is recommended for the most consistent lighting across a team, but on-site sessions at your SF office are possible — ask when booking and we’ll assess the space for natural light.

Can we request a specific background color or style?

Yes — our default studio backdrop is designed for consistent black and white tone, but let us know if you have specific brand or style preferences in advance.

How should we handle scheduling for a distributed or remote team?

For teams that aren’t all in San Francisco, individual sessions can be scheduled separately over time while still matching the same lighting setup for consistency.

Can you match the exact lighting style we used in a previous headshot session?

If we shot your previous session, yes. If it was shot elsewhere, bring a reference and we’ll get as close as the studio setup reasonably allows.

Do you offer a package rate for a large company with 20+ employees?

Ask when you reach out with your headcount — larger team sessions are scheduled as extended continuous bookings and priced accordingly.

Is black and white appropriate for every industry, or is it better suited to certain fields?

It works broadly well across industries — creative fields, law, finance, tech, and healthcare all use black and white headshots successfully. It reads as professional and timeless rather than tied to any one industry aesthetic.

Can we get a mix of headshot styles — some close-up, some three-quarter body?

Yes — mention the specific crops or styles you want when booking so we can plan for variety within each sitting.

Do you offer touch-up sessions if someone changes their appearance later (new haircut, etc.)?

Yes — individual re-sessions are available any time to update a specific person’s headshot without redoing the whole team.

Do you provide a signed model release for commercial use of the headshots?

Ask when booking — usage terms and any needed release documentation are confirmed before the session for commercial or marketing use.

Can you shoot headshots for a conference or event with a tight turnaround?

Yes — mention your deadline when booking and we’ll prioritize scan delivery accordingly.

How should we prepare our office space if we want on-site headshots instead of studio?

A space with a plain wall and access to natural window light works best — we’ll assess your specific space in advance if you choose this option.

Is there a way to preview lighting and background before the full team shows up?

Yes — we typically set up and test lighting before the first person sits, so the setup is confirmed before the team’s time is used.

What if our company rebrands and we need updated headshots later?

Just book a new session whenever needed — there’s no restriction on how often a team refreshes its headshots.

Do you provide any direction on posture or body language, or just facial expression?

Both — posture, shoulder angle, and overall body language are part of the direction, since they affect how a headshot reads as much as expression does.

Can freelancers or solo consultants book this the same way a company would?

Yes — individual freelancers and consultants book this service just as often as full teams; the process is the same.

How do you ensure headshots look consistent even if they’re shot months apart for new hires?

We keep notes on lighting setup and camera distance from your original session so later individual sittings match the same look.

What’s the fastest turnaround you can offer for an urgent press or media request?

Reach out with your specific deadline — while standard turnaround is 2-3 business days for scans, we’ll do what we can for urgent requests.

What film stock do you shoot?

Primarily Kodak Tri-X 400 for its classic black and white grain, with Ilford HP5 as an alternative depending on the light and the session. Every roll is developed by hand, never sent to an AI upscaling tool.

Do I get digital scans, or only physical prints?

Both, if you want them. The Digital Scans Add-On gets you high-resolution scans of your negatives for sharing and printing elsewhere, alongside your physical darkroom prints.

How long does it take to get my photos?

Darkroom prints typically take 5-7 business days to develop and print by hand. Digital scans, when added, are usually ready in 2-3 business days.

Do you shoot corporate headshots?

Yes — black and white corporate headshots are one of our most-booked sessions, for individuals and full teams in San Francisco.

Can you shoot outside San Francisco?

Yes, within the Bay Area — reach out with your location and we'll confirm travel details before booking.

Do you rent out vintage cameras?

Yes — the Vintage Camera Consultation & Rental service includes a real 35mm body plus guidance on how to use it for your own shoot.

What if it rains on my session day?

We reschedule at no charge for weather that would ruin an outdoor session. Studio sessions are unaffected either way.

Do you retouch or edit photos with AI?

Never. Every edit is done by hand in the darkroom or with traditional printing techniques — no AI photo editing, no AI-generated portraits, ever.

Can I book a group or family session with more than 5 people?

Yes — larger group and family sessions are available, just note the group size when you book so we can plan the right amount of time.

Do you offer gift certificates?

Yes, gift certificates are available for any session type — text or call to arrange one.

What sizes do darkroom prints come in?

Standard sizes run from 5x7 up to 16x20, all hand-printed on archival photo paper. Custom sizes are available on request.

Is there a deposit required to book?

Yes, a deposit secures your date; the balance is due at the session. Exact terms are confirmed when you book.

Can I reschedule if something comes up?

Yes, with reasonable notice — reach out as soon as you know and we'll find a new date.

Do you shoot weddings outside the traditional package?

Yes — partial-day coverage and elopements are available in addition to full-day black and white film wedding photography.
