Couples & Engagement Session in San Francisco
A black and white 35mm film session built around a real relationship, not a posed template. Real film grain, real moments, no AI beautification.
What to Expect
A black and white 35mm film session built around a real relationship, shot the way you’d actually spend an afternoon together — not a posed, AI-beautified template. We shoot around San Francisco’s neighborhoods, from North Beach to the Presidio, following real moments rather than staging every frame. The goal is a set of photos that actually looks like the two of you, not like a stock engagement-shoot pose sequence repeated for every couple.
Engagement photos have become a genre with a lot of visual sameness to it — the same handful of poses, the same over-processed color grade, repeated across thousands of couples every year. A film session sidesteps that by design: fewer frames, more attention per frame, and a black and white treatment that can’t chase the same fleeting color trend everyone else is using this season.

From Booking to Delivery
The Conversation
Before booking a location, we ask how you two actually spend time together — a coffee spot, a walk you take often, a park bench you always end up on. The best engagement photos come from real habits, not a generic "romantic city backdrop."
Location & Timing
We pick timing around light (golden hour is a favorite for outdoor sessions) and a route through one or two neighborhoods rather than a single static backdrop, so the set has real variety by the end.
The Session
Sessions run roughly 90 minutes, split between a few directed frames (so you have at least a handful of "posed" options for a save-the-date) and a lot of walking, talking, and just being shot candidly as you move through the location.
Development
Rolls go into the darkroom that week — black and white development is a hand process, and every roll is developed with attention to how that day’s light actually exposed the film.
Delivery
Digital scans, most useful for save-the-dates and social announcements, typically arrive in 2-3 business days. Darkroom prints for framing or an album take 5-7 business days.
Why This Session Is Shot on Real Film
Engagement photos have a strange half-life problem in digital photography — a heavily filtered or trend-driven edit style can date a photo to a specific year almost immediately, which is a strange thing to happen to a photo meant to mark the start of a marriage. Black and white film sidesteps that entirely. It looked timeless in 1965 and it looks timeless now, because it was never chasing a trend to begin with.
There’s also something about being photographed on film that changes how people behave in front of a camera. Because we’re not chimping the back of a screen after every frame, couples tend to relax into the moment instead of performing for an immediate digital preview — which is exactly the kind of real, unguarded interaction that makes engagement photos actually good.
And for couples who plan to book us for the wedding itself, an engagement session on film is a genuine test run — you get to see exactly how a real film session feels and looks before the one day you don’t get a redo on.
Black and white also removes a strange pressure that color engagement photos can create — coordinating outfit colors, worrying about a background clashing with a chosen palette. Without color to manage, the session can focus entirely on how you two actually interact, which is what these photos are supposed to capture in the first place.
Best San Francisco Spots for This Session
See the full services list or check every San Francisco neighborhood we shoot in on the homepage.
North Beach
Old-world Italian-American charm, café culture, and narrow streets — a favorite for a relaxed, walk-and-talk session.
The Presidio
Forest, fog, and open lawns with Golden Gate Bridge views in the background — great range within one shoot.
Palace of Fine Arts
Classical architecture and a lagoon setting that photographs dramatically in black and white, especially in soft morning light.
Lands End
Rugged coastal trails for a more adventurous, less traditional engagement shoot.
How to Prepare
✓Wear complementary (not identical) outfits — solid colors and simple textures work best in black and white; save the busy patterns for another day.
✓Pick a location that actually means something to you two, even if it’s not the most "photogenic" spot in the city — the story behind it comes through in the photos.
✓Plan for some walking — most sessions cover more than one spot within a neighborhood, so wear shoes you can move in.
✓Don’t over-plan poses — the best frames usually happen in the unplanned moment between two posed shots.
✓If you get cold easily, bring a jacket you don’t mind being photographed in — SF weather changes fast, especially near the coast.

Couples & Engagement Session — Common Questions
Can we use these photos for a save-the-date or wedding website?
Yes — the Digital Scans Add-On is specifically useful here since it gets you shareable digital files quickly alongside the physical prints.
Do you also shoot proposals?
If you’re planning a proposal and want it documented, reach out in advance to discuss timing and discretion — this is a special case we handle carefully.
How many locations can we visit in one session?
Most sessions comfortably cover one to two nearby spots within the booked time — trying to cram in more than that usually means less time actually shooting at each.
What if it rains on our scheduled day?
We reschedule at no charge for weather that would ruin an outdoor session — no penalty for something outside anyone’s control.
Can we bring our dog?
Yes — just mention it when booking so we can plan framing and timing accordingly.
Is this the same as your wedding photography service?
No — this is specifically the engagement/couples session. Full wedding-day coverage is its own service with a different scope and pricing structure.
We’re not engaged, just a couple who wants photos together — is this still the right service?
Yes — this session works for any couple, engaged or not, who wants real photos of their relationship together.
Can we get a mix of posed and candid shots in one session?
Yes — sessions typically include a handful of directed frames alongside more candid, walk-and-talk photography, giving you both styles from one booking.
How should we choose between North Beach, the Presidio, and other locations?
Pick whichever actually reflects your relationship — a favorite neighborhood, where you had a first date, or just a location whose light and setting you like. We’ll help you decide during booking if you’re not sure.
Can we do the session at sunrise instead of sunset?
Yes — sunrise sessions are less commonly requested but produce beautiful, quieter light with fewer crowds at popular locations; ask when booking.
Is this session appropriate for a same-sex couple or non-traditional relationship?
Yes, absolutely — this session is built around your actual relationship, whatever that looks like.
Can we include a proposal ring or specific detail shot as part of the session?
Yes — mention any specific detail shots you want (a ring, a meaningful object) when booking.
How soon after the session can we expect to see any preview images?
Because this is film, there’s no same-day digital preview — the full set becomes available once development is complete, following the standard turnaround timelines.
Do you offer a shorter, more affordable mini-session option?
Session length is flexible and billed by the hour — ask about a shorter booking if a full 90-minute session isn’t what you need.
Can we get matching digital and print versions of the same favorite images?
Yes — pair this session with the Digital Scans Add-On and you’ll have both a physical print and a digital file for your top images.
What if we’re a long-distance couple visiting San Francisco just for this session?
That’s a common situation — mention your travel dates when booking so we can plan the tightest possible timeline around your visit.
Do you offer any styling or posing guidance if we’ve never done a photo session before?
Yes — direction and guidance throughout the session is part of the experience; you don’t need prior modeling experience.
Can the same photographer who shoots our engagement also shoot our wedding?
In most cases yes — many couples specifically book the same photographer for continuity between their engagement and wedding coverage.
Do you offer a package that includes both an engagement session and a smaller print album?
Ask about combining the session with the Fine Art Darkroom Prints service for a curated small album of your favorite frames.
What if we want photos with our extended families included, not just the two of us?
Mention this when booking — a portion of the session can be planned for group frames with family if timing allows.
Can this session double as an anniversary shoot instead of a pre-wedding engagement session?
Yes — this session works for any couple at any stage of a relationship, not only pre-wedding engagements.
Do you offer any guidance on what to say to a partner who’s nervous about being photographed?
A little reassurance goes a long way — we build in warm-up time specifically so nervous partners have a chance to relax before the more directed portion of the session begins.
Can we request specific songs or a particular vibe to set the mood during the shoot?
Yes — feel free to bring music or set the tone you want; a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere makes for better, more natural photos.
What if one of us is significantly more comfortable in front of a camera than the other?
This is extremely common, and part of what a real photographer directing the session does well — balancing attention and direction so both partners come across naturally, not just the more photogenic one.
Can we schedule the session around a specific weekday if weekends don’t work for our schedules?
Yes — weekday bookings are available and often mean quieter, less crowded locations around the city.
How much walking should we expect during a typical outdoor session?
Usually a moderate amount within one or two nearby spots — comfortable shoes are recommended, but it’s not a strenuous hike.
Can we request a specific number of final prints versus just the digital scans?
Yes — tell us how many physical prints you want when booking, separate from any digital scans you also order.
Is there flexibility on session length if things are going really well and we want more time?
We’ll always try to accommodate, schedule permitting — just ask during the session and we’ll see what’s possible.
What film stock do you shoot?
Primarily Kodak Tri-X 400 for its classic black and white grain, with Ilford HP5 as an alternative depending on the light and the session. Every roll is developed by hand, never sent to an AI upscaling tool.
Do I get digital scans, or only physical prints?
Both, if you want them. The Digital Scans Add-On gets you high-resolution scans of your negatives for sharing and printing elsewhere, alongside your physical darkroom prints.
How long does it take to get my photos?
Darkroom prints typically take 5-7 business days to develop and print by hand. Digital scans, when added, are usually ready in 2-3 business days.
Do you shoot corporate headshots?
Yes — black and white corporate headshots are one of our most-booked sessions, for individuals and full teams in San Francisco.
Can you shoot outside San Francisco?
Yes, within the Bay Area — reach out with your location and we'll confirm travel details before booking.
Do you rent out vintage cameras?
Yes — the Vintage Camera Consultation & Rental service includes a real 35mm body plus guidance on how to use it for your own shoot.
What if it rains on my session day?
We reschedule at no charge for weather that would ruin an outdoor session. Studio sessions are unaffected either way.
Do you retouch or edit photos with AI?
Never. Every edit is done by hand in the darkroom or with traditional printing techniques — no AI photo editing, no AI-generated portraits, ever.
Can I book a group or family session with more than 5 people?
Yes — larger group and family sessions are available, just note the group size when you book so we can plan the right amount of time.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes, gift certificates are available for any session type — text or call to arrange one.
What sizes do darkroom prints come in?
Standard sizes run from 5x7 up to 16x20, all hand-printed on archival photo paper. Custom sizes are available on request.
Is there a deposit required to book?
Yes, a deposit secures your date; the balance is due at the session. Exact terms are confirmed when you book.
Can I reschedule if something comes up?
Yes, with reasonable notice — reach out as soon as you know and we'll find a new date.
Do you shoot weddings outside the traditional package?
Yes — partial-day coverage and elopements are available in addition to full-day black and white film wedding photography.
